Below is an *excellent* video on car safety when it comes to traveling with dogs and cats (also make sure to check out this video, which will convince anyone!). It drives me crazy to see loose animals in vehicles, so my hope is that someday, there will be a law requiring people to restrain animals in vehicles. Just like human seatbelt & car seat laws.
When Emma and Rowan come with us in the car, we have them ride in the back seat with a harness attached to a special seat restraint that latches onto the latch bar. The harness we use is called the 3-in-1 vest harness, which comes in two different materials (solid fabric with fleece backing or mesh) and a variety of colors. You can find them here for dogs of almost every size, from 5 to 165 lbs. (and they ship out super fast). The buckle we use is the Kwik-Connect tether .
Crystal and Sophie kitties travel in a carrying case with a seatbelt restraining it. In the back seat, too, of course. We usually lay a small blanket on the bottom of the case to make it a bit more comfy for them.
Honda seems to be noticing a market for canine companions, because they're coming out with a dog friendly Element this fall. I don't care for the crating system since it's in the very back of the vehicle (not good if you get rear-ended!), but some of the features are decent, like the ramp that comes out from the back (making it much easier for older dogs to get in the vehicle) and the extra fan & spillproof bowl to keep it cooler in the back for them on hot days. Keeping things safer and more comfortable for traveling dogs is a trend I can get behind!
This video shows several different ways to keep your companion animal safe while driving and is worth a few minutes of your time. I highly recommend watching it!
