"Spector and six other pet experts who spoke with CNN conceded -- some more reluctantly than others -- that most dogs could biologically live on a vegan diet. But doing so requires substantial attention to creating a balanced dietBut of course! Just like humans, dogs need a balanced diet. I think it's been proven more than enough that both humans and dogs need certain nutrients and that all of those nutrients can be found in plant foods. Which the next paragraph in the article basically says-
that makes up for the loss of animal protein with substitutions of beans, soy
and, to a lesser extent, vegetables and grains."
"Dogs are classified in the order Carnivora, but, unlike cats (a topic for another day) they have evolved biologically as omnivores, meaning their systems can derive nutrients from a wide variety of sources, including fruits,I've heard many people insist that dogs are carnivores, which is wrong. As it says above, they're classified in the order carnivora, but are biologically omnivores.
vegetables, grains, legumes and animal products."
"If a dog has a choice he's not picking a pile of beans over chicken or meat, and he's not going to be lapping up soy," she says. "If you're going to be harmonious in your choices, be harmonious. I say respect each species for what it was meant to be, and if you feel that strongly about being vegan, get aHow is having a vegan dog NOT harmonious? Even more, how are you not respecting a dog if you're feeding him or her on a vegan diet? Too many people cry "abuse" when they hear of vegetarian or vegan dogs, but as long as the dog is healthy and happy, how is that abuse? Besides, just like a child, when faced with two choices, they may not always pick the one that's good for them. As their guardians, it's our job to make those choices for them and we do what we think is best for them. We're not "forcing our beliefs" on them, but making a choice that we believe is the healthiest for them. From my experience, those people with dogs on a plant based diet know more about dog nutrition than most other dog guardians. I also wouldn't be so sure that some pups would pick meat over a plant food. Dogs are all individuals with their own preferences, so I'm sure that some of them would pick plant foods over meat!
vegetarian animal. Bunnies make wonderful pets."
"The vegan diet also lacks some essential fatty acids that are only available in animal products like butter and fish oils, says veterinarianSeriously?!?! Essential fatty acids can be found quite plentiful in plants, as most of us vegans know. Does anyone else find it disturbing that this guy is a former president of the HSUS, yet he says something so ignorant? Even more disturbing is that he's a vet, but then again, they seem to know as much about dog nutrition as MD's do.
Michael Fox, former president of the U.S. Humane Society and author of "Dog
Mind, Dog Body.""
Well, enough of that. I didn't even bother to read the comments to the article because I'm sure that several of them would raise my blood pressure. I guess I take it a bit personally when people accuse me of abusing my dogs. Just look at Emma & Rowan, all weak, unhappy and struggling to thrive (insert eye rolling here)-
UPDATE! There is now a vegan dogs forum on the Vegan Ethos Community!
your amazing. i had this chat with people at work today. how my dog is a *gasp* vegan. and they are supposed to eat meat. kiss my butt.
ReplyDeleteDont let them get to you, we know more and accept the truth and we are choosing to be a part of change. Just because they are too small or stupid to do something that benefits many dosent mean it isnt right.
rock on.
I just read an article in the NY Times talking about raw (meat) feeding for dogs and whatnot. I was wondering why my aunt, who respects veganism and Elli's veganism, would send me an article like this. I read through to the end where there was a nice, albeit short, summary of a woman who has a vegan greyhound and a vegan beagle, who have been on the diet since '97. I was so happy they actually included something like this! CNN kinda failed, but NY Times? WIN. :D

PS. You already know my opinion on the forum. :)
Instead of discussing whether or not a vegan diet is appropriate for dogs, these article should focus on what commercial dog food is currently made of and how it contributes to auto-immune syndromes and allergies in canines.
ReplyDeleteIf people knew what/where dog food came from, they probably would be willing to explore other options.
I know, that article was ridiculous! I did have one nice conversation with a coworker about it, though, so it wasn't a total waste. I cracked up at the idea of dogs choosing what to eat--I'm sure Lucy would love to chow down on a pile of chocolate, but come on, this is a creature who has eaten her own poop! I'm not trusting her health to her own gastronomic whims.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would totally love a forum. The pet blogger at my local paper invited me to do a guest post on having a vegan dog, and it would be great to be able to say, "Look at all these other people with healthy, happy vegan pups!"
I would def be in! I am SO TIRED of getting my ass drug over the coals for "forcing my beliefs" on my poor, poor, Vegan dogs....
ReplyDeleteShenandoah, I totally agree. Everyone is so focused on what I feed my dogs, which happens to be a huge variety of FRESH foods on top of vegan kibble, and totally ignores the reality of what's in meat based commercial kibble. LIke, really? That's better than my dogs extremly thought out, supervised Vegan diet???
I'm in!! Maggie isn't on a totally vegan diet, but she seems to be a lot healthier since I have been making her dog food over the last several months. Maggie loves her veggies. :o)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Shen, if only people knew what was in store bought dog food!
I don't understand why people think a vegan diet is so unhealthy. Some one told Tony over the weekend that if I was eating meat that I wouldn't have gotten sick. That made me sooooo mad!
Stuff like this is exasperating. But well done in your rebuttle. These mindsets (the ones expressed in the article) are the products of years of conditioning and brainwashing...I think the humans in question would most likely do well to pay "substantial attention to creating a balanced diet" for themselves as well. It's so true that vegans/vegetarians generally know so much more about health and nutrition than the average omnivore.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the argument that you're "forcing your beliefs on them" that's not a very strong argument, because you can equally say that those who feed their dogs meat and animal products are also forcing their beliefs on them; it's just a different belief. Anyway, they can believe what they want: beliefs have very little bearing on what is actually true and false.
Love the shot of Rowan totally airborne.
It would be great to have a community like that! And in terms of the ignorance of so-called "experts" (aka most vets/MDs), I guess I am really not that shocked anymore (maybe b/c I work with the MD portion of that group). Sad, but true. Anyway, I love the pic of Emma + Rowan...it really is worth a 1000 words! :)
ReplyDeleteRebecca- I couldn't agree with you more! I haven't had anyone in "real" life give me flack about it, but so many people online have said negative things, in general. Ignorance!
ReplyDeleteXimena- stay tuned, because I'll be announcing a forum very soon! I'm just working out the last few details. :) I really like what they said at the end of the Times article. We need more press like that!
Shen- no kidding! You hit the nail on the head. It's horrendous what's in most commercial foods. Scary, really.
Vegan Burnout- that's awesome that you were invited to write for your local paper! Funny how people will say that it's "not natural" for dogs to eat a vegan diet, yet they'll go to a circus or zoo to see animals. Like that's natural!
Christine- that "forcing our beliefs" BS is just that- BS. Rose said it well in her comment about how it's such a weak argument. I hope to see you on the forum after I announce it!
Michelle- you & Maggie would be very welcome on the forum! It's going to be for anyone that's like minded as far as plant powered pooches goes. :) I'm so glad to hear that she appears to be healthier since you started making her food. That's so great! That comment someone made to Tony is total BS! I would be really mad, too. Vegans are humans, just like everyone else. Sure, we have those vegan superpowers, but we still get sick! lol
Rose- I love what you said about the forcing beliefs argument being weak. It's so true! Same with that so many people should balance their diets. There are so many unhealthy omnis, yet they won't hesitate to criticize a vegan diet.
Melissa- It is sad that so many doctors don't know much at all about nutrition. I've had so much bad advice from both MD's and vets that I question everything now. I can just imagine how frustrated you get being around MD's sometimes!
Hey! Just wanted to say I enjoyed reading your thoughts, and my dogs are healthy and happy on a veg diet, too. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteim with shen, pet food contains pets.
ReplyDeleteim so sorry i missed this when you posted it Molly.its really great!
"and if you feel that strongly about being vegan, get a
vegetarian animal. Bunnies make wonderful pets"
ok, i get that he isnt on the vegan side,,but that line was kinda cute/funny.
id like to get my dog on a vegan diet. id love any help you could give me. was there a recipe for everyday dog food in you book?
dirtyduck- my book only has treats in it, but there is a really good recipe in this book---> http://www.vegandognutritionassociation.com/vegandognutrition.html
ReplyDeleteIt's been made to be nutritionally complete. Confession- I feed our girls a commercial food, but it's a really good one and I have several good reasons for it (which I'll be posting about eventually). I've tried cooking for them several times now and it just hasn't worked for either of them, unfortunately. Feel free to email me with any questions you have. I'll help as much as possible! :)
thanks for the analysis of this. I am sick of hearing the thriving and surviving stuff too. sienna is obviously thriving since no one think she's 11 when they meet her. and she may pick out the meat first compared to grains but she DEMANDS veggies, as evident in her growling for kale stalks today.
ReplyDeletebitt- I know what you mean about the veggies! As soon as Emma & Rowan hear us cutting veggies, they come running and patiently sit there, staring at us. :)

PLEASE start a vegan dog forum! I have no where to go and no one to discuss vegan dogs with! My vets are unsupportive. I really miss your vegan dog site. I hope you start another one up very soon!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous- there is a vegan dogs forum now! You can find it at www.forum.veganethos.com :)
