Dog Treat Recipe- Goji Berry Muffins

Goji Berry Muffins

Goji berries are a superfood, providing a ton of nutrients.

2 ½ cups flour
½ cup oats
¼ cup wheat germ or additional flour
2 Tbsp. ground flax
1 Tbsp. hulled hemp seeds (optional)
1 tsp. baking soda
½ cup natural applesauce
2 Tbsp. blackstrap molasses or maple syrup
1 ¼ cups water
½ cup dried goji berries

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray mini muffin pans with non-stick spray.

In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, wheat germ, flax, hemp seeds and baking soda. Add applesauce, molasses or maple syrup and water, mixing well. Add goji berries, again mixing well. Scoop batter into the muffin pans and bake for 30 minutes. Remove and let cool completely before serving. Store in the fridge.

Makes approximately thirty mini muffins.

Variations

Biscuits- Reduce water by ½ cup and eliminate baking soda. Knead into a stiff dough, adding ¼ cup of flour at a time until it can be rolled out without sticking to the rolling pin (add a bit of water if it gets too dry). Roll out onto a floured surface to ¼ inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters or knife and bake on a greased cookie sheet until crispy.

Cookies- Add ¼ cup of flour at a time until dough is firm enough to form into balls. Place dough balls on a greased cookie sheet and press flat with your hand or a fork. Bake until crispy.

Bagels- Make the same as the cookies except do not press them flat. Dip your finger in water and poke a hole in the middle of the dough ball. Flatten slightly to form a bagel shape. Bake until crispy.

  1. Goji berries are the really expensive ones, right? I bought some a while back and have been confounded as to how to use them lol - thank you for solving my problem!

  2. This reminds me of when I was feeding Zuki soaked goji berries for their health properties. He loved them and didn't love other berries as much.

  3. Ximena- I think they are expensive, but I can't remember what they cost.... I also have a doggie granola recipe that you can use them in. I'll post it next week!

bitt- I'm going to have to try soaking them to see if Emma & Rowan will eat them plain. That's a great idea!

  6. Rose- that is Emma! She's great with agility. That picture was taken while we were on one of our road trips to Colorado, at the Estes Park dog park. It's such a beautiful park! I hope your girls like the muffins!

Michelle- if you make them, I hope that Maggie likes them!

  8. Thanks Laurie! It's one of my favorite pictures of her. :) She really loved that agility course in the park. So much that we're considering getting some agility equipment for our yard.
