The Flower that inspired me to use the name was the beautiful girl in the pictures below. Flower was the first animal companion that I ever had. A few months after I graduated high school, I moved into my own place and almost immediately went to the local shelter to adopt a cat. She didn't have a name yet, but this sweet little girl caught my eye and she came home with me. Flower and I spent the next four years together, until one day, I decided I had enough of the guy I was living with and left him. At that time, I couldn't take Flower with me, so I had to leave her behind, which was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. About a month later, I was settled in a new place and could finally take her in with me, but my ex refused to give her to me. Looking back, I know that I should have fought for her, but at the time, I thought it was a hopeless situation. I had Crystal with me and we tried to go on without her sister.About a year later, I ran into my ex and asked him how Flower was. He told me that he had started to let her outside and that one day, she just never came back. I was heartbroken and sick from thinking about what could have happened to her, but I also wondered if maybe she went looking for me. I hope that someone took her in and loved her for the rest of her life. I hope that she knows that I never stopped loving her.
Flower was everything I wasn't at that time. She was assertive, confident and knew what she wanted. She was a snuggler and could be so goofy. Her personality can never be matched.
Besides my dear Flower, there are a few other reasons that I went with Vegan Flower as my blog's name. I've always loved the sunflower "vegan" and decided to get a rather large tattoo of the V part of it on my right leg a few years ago. Out of all the tattoos I have, it's my favorite. Then there is my love of flowers and all they bring to this world. They attract butterflies, bumble bees and dragonflies, which I love to see. They're colorful, beautiful and often smell divine (especially lilacs!). They cheer people up and make this world a much better place. They're one of the reasons why I want to live in a warm climate some day, so that I can see flowers growing and blooming year round in their natural environment. Flowers are a must for my paradise!
What a great story! I love your kitty Flower. I think your first cat always stands out and you remember them forever. Your flower tattoo is awesome! I actually want one that is similar. I love plants and flowers and nature. I was sad when I moved here and could not take my bumper sticker with me that said, "plant seeds and sing songs". I was such a hippy back in the day as well and still am. I think worse now ;) Thank you for sharing this with us :)
ReplyDeletePS- you know all those bumper stickers you have that you send out with giveaways? How did you get them from the Go Vegan Now site? I would like to get that bumper sticker that says something like, they need their mothers as much as we do. I can't find where on the site to purchase them? Help!
ReplyDeleteWhat a story. Flower looks like my Heather a bit. So gorgeous. I too had a cat who got away when I was a kid (he ran off) and I will forever wonder about him.
ReplyDeleteI love your tattoo and shoes too.
What a wonderful backstory to your blog name. Your name is actually what drew me to your blog. I named all of my rescued horses after flowers just so that I could happily say "I'm going to go water the Flowers!" to my hubby each day :) I love my horsie flower garden more than I can say. And I love that horses are vegan, too! Flowers are so beautiful and full of life and hope. I'm glad you chose that name!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I am so sorry about your kitty flower. I cannot even imagine how awful that must have been for you.
Hopefully she fou d her own vegan flower to spoil her as you would have!
Thanks for sharing those stories,
Sue and the crew at DVR
Flower is certainly a beautiful word that pertains to many lovely things. I had forgotten about that cute skunk from Bambi.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you had to leave Flower that way. It must have been so difficult for you. She's lovely. I hope that she's still living happily somewhere. I'm sure she will always know that you loved her.
Your kitty Flower was just beautiful, and I have no doubt she always knew and will forever know how much you loved her! It's awful that you were in that situation, and while I'm glad for and proud of you for extricating yourself from it, it's terribly sad that you were unable to take your furbabies with you. I think Flower vamoosed because she decided, "If this bozo isn't good enough for mom, he's not good enough for me, either!" I'm sure someone kind took your lovely girl in.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, are you aware of Ahimsa House? I discovered it this weekend when a list of local subdivisions I'd found contained one called, "Ahimsa!" Neither of us had ever heard of it, have no idea where it is, and are dreadfully curious. And in my internet search (which yielded nothing about the subdivision), I found Ahimsa House.
Anyway, I adore flowers too, and think it's a perfect name for your blog and "logo" for you! :-)
I really enjoyed Sue's comment about why she names her rescued horses after flowers! :-)
You already know the story behind my blog's funky name. When I was trying to come up with a name for my blog, that's the one that kept popping into my head. I kept batting it away, thinking, "Oh, that's stupid!" No one would know what it meant, it didn't say anything about me, etc etc, but it wouldn't go away. And since I had no clue what I was going to do with my blog or what direction it might take, and it's still awfully random, I suppose an all-purpose, vague name is perfect for it. :-)
im so sorry that that all happened with flower and your stupid ex. i dated a guy that told my mom that if i ever cheated on him he would light my dog on fire. so i really get you, but to have to leave her behind and then feel so hopeless later on? you didnt know then what you know now.
ReplyDeleteno big story behind my blogs name:)just picked it cuz of lilly.
I love that story! Flower was such a beauty. Her personality really shines through!
ReplyDeleteI keep meaning to do an "About" section for my blog, to explain the name. Long story short, it has nothing to do with either 1) being burned-out on veganism or 2) being a stoner. I didn't think it through very well, evidently!
Cool story! That's so sad that you had to leave Flower behind....what a cutie she is!
ReplyDeleteBambi is my all time favorite movie! :o)
Very cool tattoo!
I hope your Flower kitty lived a long and happy life. I can't imagine how hard it was to go on without her. I like to think everything happens for a reason (although don't get me wrong, I find this hard to rationalize in many instances). Maybe she escaped from your ex, so she could help someone else who needed her snuggles too.
ReplyDeleteCarissa- the good folks at Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary sent me those bumper stickers. I just gave out my last one, otherwise I'd send you another. If you wrote to them, I'm sure they'd send you one, though. They really should get an online store because they have adorable t-shirts, too.
ReplyDeletebitt- those shoes are my old Mohops, which I've since traded in for her newer version. They're such fun shoes!
Sue- I love that you named all of the horses after flowers! What appropriate names for them, too.
Rose- it was very difficult to leave her and is the reason why I stayed with him for as long as I did. I hope you're right and that she's somewhere safe & happy. She'd be almost 19 now. <3
Laurie- that was really bittersweet for me, leaving him like that. Hopefully Flower is loved by someone because she deserves that and so much more. I've never heard of Ahimsa House! That's so cool. I might just have to do a post on that to help get the word out on them. I think your blog name is very inventive, has a great ring to it and fits you perfectly! I can't pinpoint how it fits you, but it does. :)
dirtyduck- wow, what a psycho for that guy to say that to your mom! WTF?? I unfortunately went from that relationship to one where I had my life threatened. Thank goodness I have Mike in my life now, or I think I would have sworn off relationships.
ReplyDeleteVegan Burnout- well, I was wondering if your blog is named so because you like to do burn rubber in your hot rod. :D Really, though, I'd love to know the story behind it!
Michelle- it was so funny because last night, we saw a few clips of Bambi advertise on TV and Flower the skunk was in them. Weird! That is definitely one of my favorite animated movies. They don't make them like that anymore!
Melissa- I like to think that everything happens for a reason, too, and really hope that she found a nice home that loved her. It was really hard to go on without her, but that entire experience did help me to become a much, much stronger person, so I guess there was a silver lining to it. I just wish it didn't have to involve my sweet little girl to get it.
Hi Molly,
ReplyDeleteThank You for checking up on us.
I had a kitty just like Flower and her name was Mischief. I still wonder what happened to her...
I'm so glad to see you around again, Kinga! Hopefully both Mischief & Flower ended up in loving homes. It's horrible not knowing, though. :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that story. Flower has so much meaning for you :)
