Nylabones That Are Vegan

Emma and Rowan are both strong chewers, so it's hard to find things for them to gnaw on that are not only durable but vegan, too.  Nylabone comes through for us, though, and we've gone through several of their bones.  The girls love them!  Not all of their bones are vegan, and some of the ones you would think aren't vegan actually are.  To clarify things, I emailed them, asking them which of their products contain animal products or by-products and got a quick response-

Hi Molly – All Nylabone Edible chews contain meat-based flavoring. Most Nylabone Non-Edible chews contain a small amount of chicken or other meat-based powder. All “Original” flavor products (including Galileo®, Big Chews, Prince & Princess bone & wishbone) contain a small amount of chicken meal or powder. "Chicken" and "Liver" lines have extra flavor, meal or meat-based powder added.

The following products do not contain meat or meat-based protein of any kind:

For Strong Chewers: Dura Chew® Bacon flavor, Double Action® Chews (including Prince & Princess Double Action Chews), Double Action® Dental Chews, Bar-B-Chew® T-Bone

For Moderate Chewers: Bar-B-Chew™ Cob Bone and Rib Rack

Interactive Toys (all unflavored): FRISBEE® flying discs, Flexi Chew® Tug Toys, all Rhino® rubber products (vanilla scent) and Dura™ Toys.

Most of these products are flavored with a vegetarian (plant-derived) natural flavoring that does not contain any meat protein. Similar to "tofurkey" and "veggie-burgers," they have the meat flavor without the meat. Double Action® Chews are unflavored, but contain a bacon aromatic in the ends to make them more attractive. All of our non-edible chews that say “bacon flavor” on the front of the package contain no meat-based flavoring.

  2. What a great response! So helpful, I can't believe someone actually took the time to type that all out for you. Wow. :)

I'm not sure that Elli would enjoy one of these, but maybe? How would I ever know?

How awesome of you to feature this -- now I don't have to stand around a store wondering which ones I can buy!

  4. I wouldn't even have thought to check things like this, some things even though obvious just pass me buy!

I know my old dog was a chewer...he used to get through the "chew" proof toys in about 5 seconds. I think dog toy companies need to spend more time thinking about the design of their products sometimes. lol

It is a bit like crisps...the meat flavoured ones are often vegan but then salt and vinegar aren't!!! lol

  6. So all the non-edible chews are vegan? Do you buy these at Petsmart?

  9. Hey everyone!

I found it funny that the bacon ones are vegan, too. We're going to be picking up a few new ones this weekend for the girls. There's a special occasion coming up that we'll be giving them to them for. :)

Shen- not all of the non-edible chews are vegan. I can post pictures of the ones that are, or links, even, if you'd like. Just let me know, I'd be happy to. :) We do get them at Petsmart, but I think that most supply stores like that have them.

  10. Supply stores?! What is that?

I'll look for the Nylabones at Petsmart. I'll be interested to see if my pups are into them. They're certainly not into Kongs.
