The sun sets at 4:30 now, making taking walks with the girls a bit more challenging. We don't have sidewalks, but we have plenty of night time blinky & reflective things. Still, I'm not a fan of walking at night, especially since the speed limit on our road is 35 (which means most people go 45+), there are no street lights and there isn't much shoulder to walk on.
Tonight, we decided to try something a bit different and drove a few miles to the nearby state park to hike on one of the trails. It was..... interesting. While we probably won't be doing it again, it was something I'm glad we tried. The girls were *very* excited, but even with my glasses on & a flashlight in hand, I had a hard time seeing. There was a gorgeous orange full moon out, plenty of stars and fresh air. Those I loved. On the other hand, it was disorienting and a bit creepy. We're fans of horror movies, so every movie that was set in the woods at night started flashing through my head. Yeah, we probably won't be hiking in the dark again.
For the rest of the night, we'll be watching a few shows we DVR'd (Beavis & Butthead and The Office), surrounded by this-
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Those are some happy looking girls! A good weekend to snuggle with them with these cold temps we're having.
ReplyDeleteOoh, sounds like a creepy walk! I'd be scared to do that, I think. But you have to do what you have to do. 4:30 is really early for it to get dark.
ReplyDeleteAww the girls are so sweet! At least you can say you went on an adventure! I am so with you, the sky was AMAZING tonight. Huge full moon and crystal clear skies here. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean about the creepiness of your night walk. It's pleasant and you want to enjoy it, but it's hard to keep from seeing strangeness in the woods. And as you said, it's hard to see at all. But the dogs love it!
ReplyDeleteOh, too funny about scaring yourselves! I've done that too many times, and unfortunately, I have a family that pounces on those opportunities to scare me at every turn.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I never watch horror films; they prey on the mind! I'm a big enough scaredy cat anyway...don't need the extra cues for my over-active imagination.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful, cozy weekend! Looks like everyone is happy to be indoors and by the fire!
Susan- it is perfect snuggling weather!
ReplyDeletefoodfeud- it was creepy, but cool at the same time. I kind of like getting creeped out.... which probably makes me quite strange.
vava- It definitely was an adventure! We ended up cutting it short, but I'm glad we did it. The sky was certainly amazing.
Andrea- The pups really did love it. They were SO excited. Makes me wonder if their sense of smell is intensified when they can't see as well. They sure were sniffing a lot!
blessedmama- We do that around here, too, as well as at work. I've been scared plenty!
Rose- They do prey on the mind! I can usually get over them pretty fast, but some stick with you, as ridiculous as they can be. :)
LOL - I haven't been on a nighttime walk in the woods like that since I was a kid, and used to go for walks late at night through the deep, dark Maine woods with my dad during our summer visits to my grandparents' farm. He used to love to scare me (and I confess, I used to love to be scared!) by tossing a rock deep into the trees when I didn't notice, making me think it was a large critter, "red in tooth and claw." He also always chose those walks to tell me ghost stories, featuring the evil ghost of a man who'd actually been buried in an old family plot in those very woods. Wouldn't you have loved to have my dad along on your night hike? LOL
ReplyDeleteI chuckled at your description of the girls being so excited about it (oh to have their night vision!). It made me remember how excited I'd always get when I was little and my parents would decide to go shopping (usually at Sears) at night. Such a thrilling adventure! :-)
Laurie- I would have had fun with your dad! lol What fun that he did that with you. I grew up around woods and remembering trudging through them all alone at night. Creepy, but so fascinating!
ReplyDeleteOur night walks have Shadow frenzied because he totally goes into dog mode - sniffing, nose-to-ground and we have to run!
ReplyDeleteAw, Shadow. <3 I can just imagine how much fun he has on those walks!
