Our Vegan Thanksgiving

While we're not big on the holidays around our house, we do get into them a bit.  Last night and this morning, Mike cooked up a storm of food for the day while Rowan watched him from the couch.
After taking the girls for a walk, we loaded up the car with the food and drove to one of Mike's brothers.  The food included three recipes from the Happy Herbivore cookbook- cajun meatloaf, stuffing and cornbread, as well as yams (baked with mandarin oranges, pecans & maple syrup), a bottle of wine and a cheesecake, complete with strawberry and mixed berry toppings.  All of the food went over quite well with everyone!
My brother in-law made this crockpot lentil soup and was it ever amazing!  My father in-law loved it so much that he ate four bowls!  I've already printed out the recipe so that we can have it again.
Mike donned a mustache for the day, then shaved it later.
We also got to visit with my brother in-law's pup, Rigsby.  He's so soft, fluffy and sweet.  I hung out with him and Jonas (my other brother in-law's dog, who was way too squirmy & excited for me to take pictures of) while everyone watched the Packers.  Football makes my eyes glaze over & my brain go numb, but dogs never bore me!
I've got to admit that the holidays are most definitely not my favorite time of the year. The sun barely comes out and even when it does, it sets way too early. It's cold, snow is right around the corner and Mike has to work long, exhausting hours (as do I, as of recently). Worst of all, though, is that hunting season has started and consumerism reaches epic gluttonous proportions. Last night while we were walking the girls, we heard several gun shots in the woods nearby. Ugh. With all of that combined, it's easy for me to get into a funk and focus on the negative. This week, I've been finding myself going into a silent withdrawal, which I tend to do from time to time. Instead of staying silent for a while and retreating inside myself, I'm trying to focus on the positive things. Even if it doesn't work, at least I can say I tried, right?

I'm thankful for......

Mike and our sweeties, who make my life complete.

All vegans, who give me some hope for humanity.

Nature and all of her gloriousness.

Health for myself and my loved ones, because I know all too well what life is like without it.

Our jobs.  While not perfect, I know how lucky we are to have them.

Our home, which is our sanctuary.

I can think of a jazillion more things, but those are the main things.  I hope everyone had a wonderful day!

  1. Yummm. All the food looks so good!
& That puppy is gorgeous :)
I know what you mean about the holiday season but as long as you're trying to see the positives it will be better. Stay away from the slippery slope of negativity- you can do it!

  4. What wonderful things you are thankful for. That lentil soup looks good - I can see why your father had four bowls. There are things to get down about the holidays, but you are wise to focus on the good things, too.

  7. That's a wonderful list of things to be grateful for, and you deserve each and every blessing in your life! I share several of the items on your list, and am also grateful for your friendship, Molly. As well as for the fact you shared the link to that lentil soup recipe. :-) That looks wonderful - now all we need is a crock pot! (Our old one finally bit the dust). That entire spread looks great, you've got yourself one fine chef for a husband!

Rigsby's adorable! What a sweet face! We spent last evening with vegan friends, enjoying a wonderful dinner and playing with their gorgeous 8-month old wolf hybrid pup, Shakti. She is a total hoot! But did you get the whole Sniffing Inquisition from Emma & Rowan when you got home like we did from our girls? LOL I had trouble explaining our disloyalty! :-)

  9. Happy Thanksgiving! Your list was really nice and your meal looks delicious and warming. I hope that you are able to maintain your optimism and that this holiday season will instead bring you happiness and joy. It is easy to see the horrible things that happen in this world because there are a lot of yucky things going on...but if we can focus our energy on doing what we can to balance that out maybe the holiday season will be a bit more joyous :)

  10. Darkness, cold and rain are things I've mostly learned to live with, but shots ringing out would be a little hard to take. It's good that you can balance all the negatives with your beautiful list of gratitude — all blessings to be grateful for. We all have our dark moments, but it sounds like you know how to seek out the bright spots. Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. I read your other post too and I'm so sad that it's been a tough time. I've had my struggles with finding ways to stay positive. Withdrawal can be ok for awhile if it gives you time to think. But depression can easily hit this time of year in the cold and dark weather. So take some time to be nice to yourself.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Yeah, we have the gun shots here too. I cringe everytime I hear them.
Great things to be thankful for! :0)

  13. Happy Belated Thanksgiving!
The holidays bring the good and not so good don't they. Shifting your focus is a great idea though. Thoughts have power :)
