I've got to admit, it wasn't the healthiest week for us. Mike had to work a lot of overtime (our place of employment gets super busy before holidays) and we seemed to run out of food in the house faster than normal. Still, we got in mostly healthy food, like this West African Peanut Soup from Dining With Friends. The only difference we made in the recipe was to leave out oil and use veggie broth to saute with instead, as we have been for a while now. It's a great soup for dipping hearty, grainy bread in.
We also had Simply Lovely Quinoa from The Garden of Vegan. It's one of Mike's favorite dishes and it lives up to it's name. Very simple and quite lovely!
Today, we found our cupboards very bare, so we went to The Weather Center for an early lunch of Sandstorm sandwiches. Both of us got half sandwiches since they're very filling. Besides, we try to really limit refined foods like white bread. They're filled with their homemade spicy hummus, tomato, sprouts, red onion & greens, all on toasted, crusty bread. I asked for no olives since I strongly dislike them, but Mike left them on.
In the afternoon, we went to the co-op and I was disappointed to find that they still didn't have Westsoy's chocolate peppermint stick milk stocked. We were planning on going to The Comet Cafe for a late lunch, so we stopped at Beans & Barley since they're on the way there to see if they had it in. They did! Even better, it was on sale!! I stocked up and bought four cartons of it.
We haven't been to Comet for a while now and although the food is delicious, it's definitely not health food. We started off with an appetizer of a half order of the deep fried vegan ribs. It comes with french fries, hot sauce, vegan chive mayo and bbq sauce. I had an Arnold Palmer (unsweetened iced tea & lemonade) while Mike had a Coke.
Mike had the Big Luck Burger, vegan style, which is a hazelnut patty that's topped with pickles, vegan thousand island dressing, lettuce, red onion and tomato. More fries on the side.
I got the seitan philly, which came with yet more fries. It's seitan with red & green peppers, onions and the best nootch cheese I've ever had in my life. It's a bit spicy and so full of flavor. I could only eat a third of the sandwich (it's HUGE!) and that was with Mike taking a few bites of it. Since I dislike pickles unless if they're spicy, Mike also got my pickle. The rest we brought home.
I topped off my meal by getting a coconut cream soy latte to go for the ride home. They have the best lattes which also include flavors like Milky Way, Almond Joy and French Vanilla. All can be made vegan!
So, yeah, we had a brief, guilty love affair with junk food today, but I'm okay with that and won't beat myself up for it like I have in the past. It just makes me want simple, healthy food even more!
Healthy or not, all of your meals look great! I'm starting to get major Chocolate Peppermint Stick beverage envy. Everyone is drinking it, but I can't seem to find it! Wah! The hummus sandwich looks and sounds so yummy, and I'm with you, olives are majorly yucky! Sad as this may be, the Almond Joy latte sounds like pretty much the best thing I can imagine consuming ever...and I really want one now!
ReplyDeleteI wish we had more varieties of dairy free milk...we don't even have strawberry!
ReplyDeleteThe various foods look delicious.
ReplyDeleteThat place looks crazy!! Hubby would LOVE all the comfort food. Had no idea about the peppermint stuff! Crazy vegan world out there!!
ReplyDeleteI've lost most of my taste for junk food as well but french fries will always appeal. Those look very good. The sandwich sounds great too!
ReplyDeletevava- hopefully you can find the chocolate peppermint stick drink. It's so good! I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like olives. Most people can't believe it. lol The Almond Joy flavor is really good, too. I've had it before and just loved it.
ReplyDeleteBibbity- that stinks! I'm surprised that there isn't more of a variety there. The UK seems so much more progressive than the US.
veganelder- It definitely was!
Get Skinny- Yeah, that place is pretty crazy. I used to love it, but now, not so much. It's a great atmosphere, though. :)
foodfeud- What is it about french fries that make them so irresistable? Comet has such good ones, and you can even get spicy ones. Mmmmm.....
I know what you mean after eating restaurant food...especially fried stuff; it's delicious, but afterwards you just want to go back to regular old home cooking and big salads.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks so yummy though. I really like the look of the quinoa; with all those peppers and tomatoes make it look pretty and tasty too.
Rose- yes, exactly! We especially feel that way after our road trips. Next time we take one, we're bringing along a cooler that we can plug into our car's outlet so that we can bring more food. Eating out gets old fast.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't look like junk food at all! It looks fabulous. I'm extremely jealous.
ReplyDeleteSV- the large amount of fried & refined food was too much for me. It was pretty good, though!
ReplyDeleteHello Molly
ReplyDeleteHave to say the Chocolate Peppermint Stick Soya milk looked divine. We can't get anything as lovely here. We can't get Almond milk even. Just regular soya..unsweetened and sweetened. Rice milks and if we are very lucky...oat milk. That's as exciting as it gets here in England. lol. I may have to try making my own Choc/Pep Milk..
Looked up Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Oh Yes I think I will be investing in some of his CDs..but as always I'll have to import then..but I think his music will be worth it. Thanks for the recommendation.. :o)
~R~
Red- I'm glad you like Kenny Wayne! It's too bad that England doesn't have much variety for vegan milks . I'm surprised!
ReplyDeleteI should not be staring at those fries right before lunch. Unhealthy thoughts, I'm having them.
ReplyDeleteI don't eat healthy all the time, so all the food looks so good to me. I'd have to say you've had some good eats!
ReplyDeleteI so want to try the Westsoy's chocolate peppermint stick milk.
Mmm grease! My weakness is bacon cheese fries from Wayward (vegan of course). They are so damn good. I think if you eat healthy most of the time not only can your body handle a bit of junk and process it out better, but you enjoy it more than if it's everyday food.
ReplyDeletekelly- they can be dangerous when you're hungry!
ReplyDeleteMichelle- I hope you can find that Westsoy around. I wish they carried it year round instead of just seasonally.
bitt- bacon cheese fries?! Mike would get so excited about those. We've had vegan chili cheese fries before from VG Burgers in Boulder, which were quite nice. I think you're right, too, I felt like I "recovered" a lot faster from the junk compared to before.
Don't know how I missed this post and the one with your BIL's Wheaton! How are the ribs? I wanted to try them but decided the Philly was enough seitan! I think I might have to go back one more time before I leave for Georgia! Also to Outpost to get that hot sauce!
ReplyDeleteThe ribs are so good! I highly recommend only getting 1/2 order & sharing them with someone, though, because one or two of them is more than enough. I hope you get a chance to try them & can go to the Outpost!
