The little bit of snow we got in December melted, only to be replaced by a little bit more on Sunday It's been bitterly cold lately with a nasty wind, but things are going to get mild again (or mild for this time of year, I should say). Hopefully the snow melts again because we're really enjoying not having it around! Although she doesn't go outside, Sophie was still bewildered about the weather.
We don't have a crockpot but wanted to make the lentil soup that my brother in-law made for Thanksgiving, so Mike cooked it on the stove top. He just put all of the ingredients in a big soup pan and an hour later, it was done! It turned out great and after a day in the fridge, the leftovers were even better. Perfect food for the weather we've been having.
With our simplifying, I've cleared off some space on my nightstand. Emma & Rowan each get their own small blanket at night to keep warm and help their beds stay clean longer, but during the day we fold them up and put them aside. My nightstand is now the perfect place for them while they're not in use because Sophie loves to sit at that window. I adore stuff that can have multiple uses! It's going to be perfect when we can open the window again because we planted a tree outside of it last year. She loves to bird watch!
Poor Sophie, she really puts up with a lot sometimes. Emma will try to hump her from time to time (what's up with that???) and she's often woken up when the girls go on "high alert". I don't know what they saw, but as you can see they're very interested in something out of the dining room window.
Tonight we had Black Bean, Rice & Kale casserole from the Glad Cow Cookbook. It's such a simple, delicious casserole. Mike added black olives while I added avocado. We both added hot sauce to make it spicy!
I hope that everyone is having a great week so far!
Have Sophie and Emma ever played together? The humping can often be a incitement to play. Otherwise, it's stress related. Don't believe anyone who tells you precious Emma (who wears the same alert face Elli does) is trying to dominate Sophie -- bunch of hooey!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you don't let your kitty out! And I know you are trying to get rid of stuff, but a crockpot is awesome!! That soup looks delicious in any event.
ReplyDeleteAll the food looks delish and very cozy. I love the pic with the 3 fur heads sitting on the chair :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, aw poor Sophie! At least they get along well for the most part.
ReplyDeleteThe lentil stew looks amazing, as does the casserole. I'd probably be greedy and go for both toppings :)
Stay warm!
That pic of Emma, Sophie and Rowan is so adorable. The lentil soup sounds so delicious and your rice and beans meal looks easy and tasty...I'm with you though, definitely would go with avocado!
ReplyDeleteLol, ah Sophie's such a sweetheart. I love the look on her face in the "high alert" photo.
ReplyDeleteBoth the lentil dish and the rice/bean dish look like perfect tasty and satisfying meals. I'm with you on lots of hot sauce! YUM.
Sophie reminds me of another Sophie cat I knew from someone who had a big clan of cats and dogs. She got a little picked on too. She sounds like a mellow cat to put up with it.
ReplyDeleteAll your stews and things sound perfect for the cold weather. I despise the bitter cold! But it does make the indoors so much cozier.
Ximena- I think Emma is trying to entice her to play. They do get along so well and Sophie loves to play, although the pups are a bit much for her. :)
ReplyDeleteStacy- We used to have a crock pot, but only used it once in the several years we had it, so we donated it. :)
CraftyEarthMama- thanks! Our girls make me smile and laugh every day. :)
foodfeud- If I liked olives, I would probably put them on, too. Mike isn't much of an avocado person, so it's a nice balance between the two of us.
vava- Avocado all the way! I could eat the stuff every day. It's so good!
Rose- I love when her eyes get so big like that. They're so pretty. She is quite the sweetheart!
bitt- She's extremely mellow, which is a good thing because she has to put up with her pesky little (big) sisters and Crystal kitty, who can be a crabby old bitty. The bitter cold seems to be making it's way out of her for at least a little while again. Such a relief!
We don't have a crockpot either, so I always wonder how a crockpot recipe will turn out on the stove top. That lentil soup looks really good.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing different species of animals getting along (for the most part) in the same household. My cat Jesper and dog Tico get along although at times it's more of my cat "putting up with" my dog!
ReplyDeleteI often wonder how they'd get along with a ferret....
Aww... I love seeing people's animal pictures. The food looks yummy too - especially the addition of avocadoes!
ReplyDeleteLooks like your downsizing is already benefiting the pets too!
ReplyDeleteI am not on Twitter, but someone fell and broke their arm! Please let us know it wasn't you!
ReplyDeleteSophie is such a pretty girl, I love the pictures of her gazing out the window!
ReplyDeleteThat lentil soup looks so delicious (we are currently between crock pots so I'm glad to hear it's just as delicious cooked on the stove top) that I followed the links to the recipe. Or tried to - I got a warning page saying the VegWeb page contains malware! Poo. I can see from your photo there are potatoes in it - love the combo of lentils and potatoes!
