A Snowstorm, Art Museum and Vegan Food

On Friday, we got the first snowstorm of the winter.  Sure, we've had a few light snowfalls, but this was the first significant one, which really wasn't that bad.  Hopefully it's be the one and only for the winter, which would be something else!  It dumped about half a foot on us and had us waking up to a winter wonderland.  Emma was not excited at all about it.
Rowan, on the other hand, wanted to play in it immediately.  She'll sit and stare at the patio door, hoping that Emma will come out to play with her.  Every once in a while, she gets her way.  Even by herself, though, she has a blast, bouncing all around and running gleefully at top speeds.
Yesterday we went to the Milwaukee Art Museum.  I haven't been there for over 20 years and have been wanting to go for while.  The building itself is very cool and there were some special guests on the lawn.  Can you spot them?
We parked just a few spaces down from this funky car.
This was one of my favorite paintings.
They only had a few pop art pieces, which disappointed me because it's one of my favorite visual art genres, but I liked what they had.
This cast woman was so creepy.  It looked like a real person was inside of the cast body.  They had her kind of tucked into a darker corner, too, which just added to the level of creepiness.
What looks like coral is made entirely of clear buttons.  Can you imagine the time it took to make this?  It was quite large!
This bottle cap bunny was in my favorite section, the folk art gallery.
We heard this before we saw it.  Creepy dolls, singing all creepy, in the Possum Trot Doll Theatre.  A lot of them moved, too.  Love it!  I wish I would have taken a small video of it.
After a little more than an hour, we were hungry and the crowds of people were starting to wear on me (I have a hard time with crowds, even when they're small), so we left for some food. On the way out we passed this humongous, beautiful glass sculpture.  If you're interested in seeing more of my favorite pieces, you can find them here
We decided to grab a late lunch/early dinner at the Riverwest Co-Op.  Mike got the seitan philly, which was excellent.
I got the tempeh reuben on whole wheat (I'm not a fan of rye bread).  It was..... okay.  Lots & lots of pepper, which kind of ruined it a bit for me.  I ate it, but wouldn't get it again.
After we were done eating, we headed home to watch a movie (Moneyball) and read with the girls.  Today was a very relaxing day, too.  We watched another movie (Zombie Apocalypse 2012), read a lot, decluttered the basement a bit and played with the girls.  Pure weekend bliss!

I hope that everyone had a lovely weekend!

  1. Sounds like a perfect snowy weekend! Look how cute your girls are playing in the snow :)

The art museum looks really cool! I love the glass piece! I really love glass art and jewelry, it is my favorite. i've always wanted to try glass blowing and making glass jewelry. There was a glass museum about an hour away from where I went to college where you could make your own beads for jewelry but I never made it there. The pop art is also very cool and I love the button coral!

Bummer that your lunch was too peppery. That bread looks fantastic though, super crusty and grainy and yummy.

Glad you had a nice weekend! Oh and I know what you mean about the crowds. Which is why I rarely leave my house :)

  2. Yeah, sounds like an awesome time! Is the glass a Chihuly? He does some wild stuff. I love folk art and the cast woman reminds me of some Kiki Smith stuff I saw at the Brooklyn museum - her plaster dolls and such were incorporated into a permanent exhibit so itwas really unexpected and especially creepy. I love her stuff. I really commend you and mike for getting out like that so often! I'm no good with crowds either so I usually just end up staying in far too often.
So, that's three un-spectacular Reubens I've heard about recently! maybe they're hard to perfect! Too bad.

  7. It's been about 4 years since I've been to the Milwaukee art museum, but it's really fantastic (geese!). I love the glass Chihuly sculpture (I like all his work). But I think those dolls would have given me nightmares. They look like they would try to kill you in your sleep. :(

  8. vava- glass art is really cool. I love how colorful that piece is. That bread is so good. We got a loaf of it last time we went there and really enjoyed it!

foodfeud- that is indeed a Chihuly! Very wild, cool stuff. :) I'm glad that I'm not the only one who likes the creepy stuff. That's what usually draws me in the most! I have had a really good reuben at another restaurant, although I don't know how it compares to actual reubens since I never had a meat one.

Jane- if dolls creep you out, the carousals that I posted about at the bottom of this post would really give you the shivers! It sounds like you had a very nice, comfy weekend. :)

terrah- wow, it's been quite warm there! We're supposed to get into the 50's the next two days, which is the warmest it's been all winter. Emma would rather it be warmer out, but Rowan adores the snow (plus it helps with her allergies & yeast issues).

Red- that's great to hear that you had a good weekend! You definitely earned one with the ordeal you've been through lately. Lots of healing thoughts to you, as well!

bitt- a missing key would be a pain in the rear! I hope that all is well with you. :)

Sage- so many people don't like dolls like that, but for some reason I adore them. The creepier, the better. Mirrors, though, creep me out, especially in the dark. *shudder*

  9. Speaking of creepy things, I was reading about the Jeffrey Dahmer walking tour in the news today and realized that this is your neck of the woods. Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have taken note of the city in the article.

Anyway, after the Lichtenstein, the Reuben is my favorite piece of art work.

  10. lol, well, I'm glad that someone could appreciate the Reuben!

Yeah, we had the worst of the worst around here- Jeffrey Dahmer & Ed Gein. *shudder* My brother worked for Marquette University's paper when he went to school there & an author who was writing a book on Dahmer paid him to sit in the court room during the trial to take notes. He was just a few feet away from him. Again- *shudder*

  11. Loveeeeeeee the arty post! & the snow, but mostly the art.
Have you ever seen Chihuly blow? He's great fun to watch, has a whole team. He's more of a co-ordinator with extremely high standards. Have you seen his stuff in kew gardens in the UK? They're some of my favourites.
& love Lichtenstein, always and forever... the first introduction to pop art I got was painting a huge backdrop in that style for our school play. I was seeing dots for weeks! I'm surprised it didn't make me hate it actually.
Stay warm & smile often :) xxxx

  12. I've never seen him blow, but would love to! Haven't seen the UK pieces, either. I'll have to see if they come up in a search. :)

Painting that backdrop had to have taken quite a while!

  13. That is some cool-ass art. The plaster woman is super creepy and would be great in a scary movie that takes place in an art museum. I'm surprised you were allowed to take pictures though; I was asked not to the last time I went to the Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, CT's art museum).

Who knew Milwaukee had so much great vegan food? Too bad the reuben was a disappointment, but I would love a seitan Philly.
